What is an Article Marketing SpecialistKirt explains…

I’ve been engaged in various forms of writing since high school. Whether it be editorials for the school paper, essays for subject requirements, or poems written in my personal time — I’ve done it all. So, when people found out six years ago that I got an online job as an Article Marketing Specialist, my family and friends said, “Oh! This job is going to be a piece of cake for you!” Well, not quite.

Generally, people think that my job is simply to produce content for websites. Yes, that’s true, but there’s more to it than just writing articles. In fact, Holistic Web Presence provided me with a lengthy period of intense training to become an effective Article Marketing Specialist.

As an Article Marketing Specialist, I am responsible for conceptualizing, producing, and publishing articles that will draw traffic to the site where the output is posted. The Internet is a huge platform, and there are millions of people who are online every single day. The challenge is to get at least a portion of this huge Internet population to take notice of my article and visit the site. When I first understood the weight of my responsibility, I asked myself, “How the heck do I do that?!”

Top 3 Secrets to Writing Great Website Content

Being employed in this company for more than half a decade has taught me a lot. Every time I create an article for a client website, I keep in mind three key elements to producing high-quality content.

The three important characteristics of a good article are:

3. Relatability

How does an Article Marketing Specialist, like me, get the attention of readers? To answer that, I first need to answer an even more important question: who are my readers?

Identify the Target Market: Who Will Read the Article?

Identify the Target Market: Who Will Read the Article?

At Holistic Web Presence, we are encouraged to know our market. We have to be specific in doing so. For example, when I need to write content for a wine cellar construction company, I need to identify whether I’m writing to other builders, interested homeowners, or commercial establishments. Knowing the target is necessary because it sets the tone of the article.

How Can This Target Market Find the Article?

Search Engine Optimization or SEO is an integral part of website content production. The right number of keywords and key phrases are intelligently placed within the article, so that the content ranks on Search Engines, like Google. This means that once I have identified my target market, I need to find out what words and phrases they enter in Search Engines when they are looking for certain products and/or services.

Holistic Web Presence provides me with resources that help me determine the top keywords and key phrases for each topic I write.

Speak The Target Market’s Language

English is the international language, but each country has a variation of this medium of communication. As a Filipino who creates articles for an American audience, I have to learn how to write using American English. This is challenging sometimes.

Filipino English is quite different from American English. The word “Sharpie,” for example, is a term commonly used by Americans to refer to a marker. That’s because Sharpie is a popular brand of marker in the US. Filipinos, on the other hand, use the word “Pentel Pen.” The term Sharpie, for an average Filipino, could be interpreted as a type of blade or cutter!

Overcoming the difference between these two cultural uses of English is challenging, and if I don’t get it right, I could be utilizing words and phrases that may not be relatable to our target market. At Holistic Web Presence, I submit my articles to American editors before I publish them. The editors review my work, so I can be sure that my articles are understandable and relatable to an American audience.

2. Originality

Plagiarism is a big NO. Search Engines, like Google, will give a poor ranking for articles that are an exact copy or are too similar to existing content on the web. This is why it is always my job to think of brand new content.

Finding Inspiration

Sometimes, coming up with an original write-up can be taxing. My brain can get so fried from producing so many articles every month that I often run out of ideas for topics to write.

Often, article writers are tempted to mass-produce content, for them to maintain activity on a site. For me to maintain the quality of my articles, I always take ample time when writing them.

What I do to combat running out of ideas is to get inspiration from existing articles online. It’s perfectly acceptable to check out other websites, especially those of the client’s competitors, to search for ideas. The important thing is never to copy their content. A great tool I regularly use double check my content is original, is Copyscape.

Tools to Avoid Plagiarism

Whether I spin an existing article or generate entirely original content, I have to use a tool to check my output’s originality. Holistic Web Presence has provided all of us writers with the resources that can effectively evaluate the originality of our articles. These resources will compare our articles to existing content on the web and assess for similarity. This process helps us avoid plagiarism.

1. Consistency

Constant activity on a website helps to make it appear to Google. This is why it is imperative that I produce at least one to two articles a week for a website.

Quality over Quantity

Often, article writers are tempted to mass produce content, in order for them to maintain activity on a site. The problem with this is that the quality of the write-ups are often compromised as a result. A smart Article Marketing Specialist will ensure not only the regular production of content, but also the consistency of the quality of the articles.

For me to maintain the quality of my articles, I always have to take ample time writing them. I keep in mind to never rush a write-up, just for the sake of creating one. Each article that I publish should have gone through the necessary processes of making sure that it is relatable, original, and consistent.

It is better to produce one high-quality article a week than produce ten that are poorly written. Low-quality articles – faulty grammar, insufficient or inappropriate use of keywords/key phrases, and duplicate content – can do more harm to the ranking of a website than good.
